Facebook Ads for Musicians: How Much to Spend and What to Optimize For
Anto Dotcom · Published October 1, 2026
Quick answer: Musicians should start Facebook and Instagram ads with a small test budget they can afford to lose, spread across several creatives for about a week. Optimize for clicks to a smart link or landing page (not video views), and judge results by what happens next: Spotify saves, follows and repeat listening. Scale only the creative and audience pairs that bring real listeners.
This guide to Facebook ads for musicians covers:
- ✅ a three-phase budget method: test, learn, scale
- ✅ which campaign objective to choose and why
- ✅ the creative formats worth testing
- ✅ how to calculate your cost per real listener
The budget phases come first.

The three budget phases
| Phase | Goal | Spend approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🧪 Test (week 1) | Find a hook that stops the scroll | Small, equal budgets across 3–6 creatives | Click-through rate, cost per landing-page view |
| 🔍 Learn (weeks 2–3) | Check who actually listens | Move budget to the top 1–2 creatives | Spotify saves, follows, stream sources in Spotify for Artists |
| 📈 Scale (week 4+) | Grow what works | Raise budgets gradually and add retargeting | Cost per real listener, active listener growth |
How much should musicians spend on Facebook ads?
Musicians should spend on Facebook ads only what they can afford to test and lose. Start with a small daily budget spread evenly across several creatives for about a week, then move spend to the winners and scale gradually. There's no universal number: the right budget shows which creative brings listeners who save and follow.
Two rules that matter more than the amount:
- Give each creative a fair test. Too little spend per ad and you're reading noise.
- Set a stop-loss before you start. Decide the cost per landing-page view or per save at which you'll kill an ad.
If you'd rather have it managed, MPT's Music Advertising campaign starts at $5,000/month in management, with media spend billed separately and approved in advance.
What should musicians optimize Facebook ads for?
The main difference between a good and a bad music ad campaign is what you tell Meta to find. Optimize for video views and Meta finds people who watch videos. Optimize for clicks to a landing page and it finds people who click through to listen.
- ✅ Choose a traffic or conversion objective aimed at landing-page views or link clicks to a smart link (a page with Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube buttons).
- ✅ Use a smart link or landing page you control, because you can't install Meta's tracking pixel on Spotify itself.
- ❌ Avoid engagement or video-view objectives as your main goal. They're cheap, but rarely turn into listeners.
Our post on the six Meta ad formats to test covers creative in detail. The short version: optimize for landing-page views into a DSP chooser, not vanity video views.
Creative that works for music
Test different ideas, not small edits of the same video:
| Format | Why test it |
|---|---|
| 😂 Meme / UGC | Looks like the Reels your listener already watches |
| 🌅 Mood / B-roll | Sells the feeling before the artist |
| 🎤 Performance / POV | Classic, but wrap it in POV text so it doesn't scream "ad" |
| ✍️ Lyrics | Cheap volume for testing. Pair with a clear music signal |
| 🎬 Film-style edits | Strong organically. Check clearance before running paid |
Put the hook in the first seconds, add captions, and include a soft call to action ("full song on Spotify"). Research what's running in your genre in the Meta Ad Library.
Who should musicians target with Facebook ads?
- Start broad-ish, with interests in similar artists and genres, then let the creative do the filtering.
- Pick countries where streams pay and where your audience already is. Spotify for Artists shows your top cities and countries.
- Retarget people who watched most of a video or visited your landing page.
- Exclude existing followers when the goal is new listeners.
How do you measure cost per real listener?
Meta's dashboard will show clicks. It won't show whether anyone saved the song. Work it out yourself:
- Note ad spend for the period.
- In Spotify for Artists, check the change in saves, followers and monthly active listeners over the same period, and the stream sources.
- Cost per real listener ≈ spend ÷ new monthly active listeners (or ÷ new saves, as a proxy).
Why active listeners? Spotify defines them as people who intentionally streamed you from your profile, releases or their own library in the last 28 days (Spotify support). They're the listeners ads should be buying.
Facebook ads for musicians: mistakes that waste budget
- ❌ Boosting posts instead of building campaigns
- ❌ Running one creative and blaming the audience
- ❌ Sending traffic to a slow or broken link page
- ❌ Judging success by clicks alone
- ❌ Buying "ads" from services that promise fixed stream counts. Spotify calls guaranteed-stream services scams (Spotify)
For growth beyond ads, see growing Spotify monthly listeners. For budgeting across channels, see what it costs to promote a song.
Setup checklist before you spend
- ☐ Business Manager and ad account in your own name (you should own it)
- ☐ Smart link or landing page with Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube buttons, loading fast on mobile
- ☐ Tracking (Meta pixel or conversions setup) on that page
- ☐ 3–6 genuinely different creatives, vertical, captioned, hook in the first seconds
- ☐ Custom audiences for video viewers and page visitors, ready for retargeting
- ☐ A stop-loss rule written down before launch
- ☐ Spotify for Artists baseline: saves, followers and active listeners on day 0
An example test structure (illustrative)
A simple first test, with the numbers left for you to set:
| Ad set | Audience | Creatives | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Fans of 3–5 similar artists, top 2 countries | Meme, Mood, Performance | Equal split |
| B | Broad genre interest, same countries | Same 3 creatives | Equal split |
After about a week, keep the best one or two creative-and-audience pairs by cost per landing-page view, then check Spotify for Artists to see which pair also moved saves and follows. Scale that one, and build a retargeting ad set for people who watched most of a video.
The retargeting ladder
- Cold: new people who fit your audience, shown your best hook
- Warm: people who watched most of a video or engaged, shown a different clip or the full video
- Hot: people who visited your link page, shown the release, the next single or a show
Each step is smaller and cheaper to reach, and more likely to become an active listener.
Reading your results: common patterns
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| High click-through, few saves | Hook works, song or landing page doesn't hold them | Test another section of the song. Check link speed |
| Low click-through, good saves from those who click | Right audience, weak hook | New first 3 seconds, new caption |
| Cheap clicks from unexpected countries | Delivery drifting to low-cost traffic | Tighten countries. Exclude low-quality placements |
| Results fade after a week | Creative fatigue | Rotate new creatives, not new audiences |
| Saves rise, streams flat | Early fans forming | Keep going, and retarget savers with the next release |
Frequently asked questions
Do Facebook ads work for musicians?
They can, when you optimize for clicks to a listening page, test several creative ideas, and measure results in Spotify for Artists. They don't work well when you boost posts or optimize for video views.
Can I run Facebook ads directly to Spotify?
You can link to Spotify, but you can't install Meta's pixel there, so Meta can't learn who actually listened. A smart link or landing page lets you track clicks to each streaming service.
How long should I run a Facebook ad for a song?
Test for about a week, then keep only the winners running. Refresh creative every few weeks, because fatigue can look like audience failure.
Is Instagram or Facebook better for music ads?
Most music ads run across both through Meta Ads Manager. Short vertical video usually belongs in Reels and Stories. Let the data show where your listeners respond.
Should I hire someone to run my music ads?
Consider it once you're spending regularly and can't tell what's working. MPT's music advertising services cover account setup, creative testing, weekly optimization and monthly reporting.
Stop paying for clicks that don't listen
Have MPT audit your ad account, because we measure cost per real listener, not cost per click, and scale only what brings fans.
