Share With

Music trends tend to change based on consumption habits and production. Habits are not something musicians can have significant control over. Whereas keeping up with intensifying production trends isn’t that hard if you follow MusicPromoToday. Before diving deep, you can check out one of our latest articles, TOP 5 Music Marketing Trends in 2020 You Shouldn’t Miss on music production trends.

In this article, we will discuss the most significant music trends so that besides having production tips, you will also learn to manipulate the audience’s consumption habits.

1.Keep It Short

One of the most popular trends that started going viral since 2019 is short songs. It seems like day by day; songs keep getting shorter. Whether you like it or not, you have to follow this trend to have more chances to succeed. Of course, there can always be exceptions.

From Bohemian Rhapsody to The Wall album, some songs never fitted into the standards and succeeded like no one could have imagined. That is the phenomenon of a genius, and if you’re one, we can’t wait to hear about your success, but this article is oriented toward specific tips that will make you popular.

So do not take everything you will read for a hundred percent; consider our suggestions, but most importantly, follow your heart and passion.

Last year, the average length of the top 40 songs was three minutes, seven seconds. That is 30 seconds less than in 2018. 6% of the hit songs lasted 2 minutes, 30 seconds, or even shorter in 2019. According to Pop Songs Have Become Significantly Shorter Over the Past 5 Years, the Billboard Top 100 statistics show that average pop song length has decreased with 20 seconds in the past five years till 2019. The trend has obviously changed the traditional pop song structure, another info to consider while writing songs for 2020.

2. Genres are NOT Hot

The 21st century became a lot about freedom and not trying to fit into boxes. People refuse to take labels, and artists refuse to identify genres for their songs.

It is impossible to talk about recent music trends and not talk about LilNasX and Billie Eilish. Both broke records by records in the past year and continue to go strong in 2020.

The blurring genre lines reached the point that Billie said if she was black, her music would probably be considered hip-hop, and now it is identified as pop, but she can’t understand what is “pop” about her songs. On the other hand, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” while being in Billboard’s Hot Country Charts, managed to not only go viral but become number one hit of the year.

“Old Town Road” fitted in many boxes of country music and included hip-hop groove elements. It would require several remixes to get approval from both country music and hip-hop tastemakers. To gain insights into genre identification, read Rhythm Tips for Identifying Music Genres by Ear
