In a recent video, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explained: “In the future, we think that the internet is going to evolve into a more immersive experience, something that we like to call the metaverse.”, he also mentioned how 3D Avatars are a key building block for the future of personal identity in the metaverse. You’ll be able to change your clothes, wear accessories, add your digital goods into your bag/pocket like “NFTs”, and take them with you wherever you go across the metaverse. Crazy right?
The metaverse is coming, and these cute fun little digital personas are the first piece of the puzzle.

What are Instagram Avatars?
Remember The Sims? (Who doesn’t), it’s like an advanced version of it! These Avatars are customizable 3D personas that represent you and your physical traits digitally in the metaverse. You can customize almost everything – outfits, hairstyles, facial lines, accessories, and way beyond!
For now, these Avatars can be used on stories and DMs, but soon they will be everywhere!

If you’re in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, follow the following steps to create your Avatar:
- Tap the menu icon at the top-right corner side of your Instagram profile page
- Open “settings”
- Select “Account”
- Select “Avatars”
Or, just open your Instagram Stories sticker tray and select “Avatar” sticker, and follow the on-screen prompts.
And if you’re located anywhere else, Avatars will be available in more regions globally in the coming months! WAIT FOR IT!!
What do Instagram Avatars mean for the future of the Metaverse?
Alternate digital realities with tradable NFTs, not a sci-fi movie anymore and Facebook is going all in to make it a reality! As Mosseri mentions, “If you’re going to be in these virtual worlds, you have to find a way to show up with a visual representation of who you are.”, that’s when Avatars come in!
