Share With

Throughout different parts of the world, singing in solidarity has been a growing reaction to the coronavirus pandemic. While southern cities of Salerno and Naples are singing classic Italian hits like ‘A città ‘e Pulecenelella, Sicilian capital Palermo and Turin in the north are playing various musical instruments and setting up DJ sets right in the heart of their balconies. A heartwarming trend that started in Italy has slowly swept its popularity all across the world, including Spain, Lebanon, Belgium, and the United States. Therefore, if you are interested in hearing more about the different tunes being played by residents in large apartment buildings and tower blocks from across the globe, continue reading what MusicPromoToday has gathered for you.

In Spain, local police officers in Mallorca took matters into their own hands by playing the guitar and singing for families to ease the tension while in quarantine. Families gathered outside of their balconies, clapped, cheered and sang along as the joyful officer lifted their moods for a few short minutes. This truly was a beautiful gesture police officers displayed to stand in solidarity and protection of their people.

In the capital of Spain, Spanish singer Beatriz Berodia attempted to minimize the somber corona blues by playing a concert from her balcony each night in hopes of entertaining her neighbors in Madrid. “Betta” along with her guitarist partner, Andrea Capalbo on the adjacent balcony, did not have a list of specific songs they would play but mentioned on her Instagram account that they will be taking suggestions of songs in their comments section. In one special town in Rome, neighbors enthralled one another with a revamped version of the folk song Volare, while in Florence opera singer, Maurizio Marchini, sang the beloved Puccini aria Nessun Dorma from Turandot.

Videos of Lebanese folks in lockdown have also been surfacing the web in the past weeks. In the town of Cornet Chehwan, people were filmed singing the Egyption hit, “Bent El Geran” from their balconies as they filled muffled streets with exuberant sounds.

Belgium also did its part to entertain their quarantined folks by hosting balcony concerts as well. Tigran Khanjaryan, who is of Armenian descent, held a live concert from his balcony to entertain his neighbors. Khanjaryan, who loves Greek music and the singer Nikos Vertis, sang one of his popular songs, “If You Are A Star.” Dozens gathered to hear his vocally uplifting talent stream live and had a wonderful time with their families in their balconies.

Residents in Brooklyn New York metaphorically got together and shared a song in solidarity as well. While quarantined in their homes, folks sang “Juicy” by late Brooklyn-born rapper  The Notorious B.I.G. (also known as Biggie Smalls). As the video went viral on Facebook, it truly grasped the idea of how music can bring people together regardless of any given situation we might be in.
