Travis Pratt, photographed at University of Houston Wednesday July 10, 2013. Pratt a singer who lives in Houston, is one of the competitors in the new season of the TV show "America's Got Talent." He made a big splash in his audition for two reasons. First, even though he has classical training as a tenor, he actually sang a soprano aria in its actual high range, which caught everyone by surprise. When that was over, he surprised everybody again by proposing to his girlfriend on the air. The video went viral later. Pratt went on to compete in the first round of the contest in Las Vegas, and that part of the competition (which was pre-recorded) airs July 16 and 17. Pratt grew up in a musical family in Georgia, and he went on to study classical/opera singing. He directs the choir at the Macedonia Worship Center in Houston. (Billy Smith II/ Chronicle)
