“Truffle Butter” was a single by Trinidadian-American artist Nicki Minaj, featuring rappers Drake and Lil Wayne.

Overview:

“Truffle Butter” was included as an exclusive bonus track on the iTunes Store edition of Nicki Minaj’s 2014 third studio album The Pinkprint. Featuring guest vocals from rappers Drake and Lil Wayne, it was produced by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records. The track was released as the album’s fifth single on January 23, 2015. “Truffle Butter” is a mix between Hip-Hop and house music, and contains a sample of Maya Jane Coles’ “What They Say”.

The single received widespread acclaim from critics, many of whom preferred it over Minaj’s previous collaboration with Drake and Lil Wayne, “Only”. The song peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, extending her lead as the female artist with the third-most appearances on the chart. Several artists have since released cover versions of the track, including rappers T.I. and Ludacris. Knowing “Truffle Butter” would be a hit, Minaj’s crew teamed up with MusicPromoToday for the advertising and promotional strategy needed to get it to the top.

Solution:

MusicPromoToday created early hype for “Truffle Butter” by releasing a trailer for the single prior to the official launch of the full-length music video. By designing and executing a creative social media campaign teasing the sneak-peek, the strategically-timed campaign had both fans and media outlets ablaze in hot anticipation of the video before it was even available in its entirety. Not only did a slew of new social media followers ensue, but over 200 blogs published stories about the single leading up to its release. Many media outlets also included flyers and banners featuring the trailer artfully teased by MusicPromoToday, ultimately driving more traffic to “Truffle Butter”.

Results:

“Truffle Butter” debuted at number 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100. This was Minaj’s 60th appearance on the chart — only the fifteenth artist ever to do so. It also extended her lead as the the female artist with the third-most appearances on the Hot 100, falling only below Aretha Franklin and Taylor Swift. The single gave Drake his 74th entry on the chart, tying him with Ray Charles for the sixth-most Hot 100 appearances, and Lil Wayne his 124th entry, second only to the cast of Glee‘s record 207. As of May 2015, “Truffle Butter” has sold 910,000 copies domestically, certifying it Platinum.
