Apple Plans Beats Redesign To Rival Spotify

The largest music retailer in the U.S. is recharging its services.

Apple is reestablishing its Beats Music application to take on Spotify and other music streaming companies, the New York Times reports.

Its been nearly a year since Apple acquired Beats by Drefor $3 billion.

The consumer electronic giant has reportedly enlisted Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor to redesign the application, along with a team of Apple and Beats employees – including co-founder Jimmy Iovine.

According to the Times, Apple recently attempted to persuade record labels to lower licensing costs, so that they could sell subscriptions to its updated streaming service for $8 a month, while companies like Spotify and Rhapsody charge $10.  The record labels did not agree to Apple’s request.

An Apple employee also told The Times, the new application will feature “many of the same characteristics as the Beats Music streaming service.”

For now, the name will remain the same but the complete overhaul could mean the Beats Music moniker will be discarded.

In addition to launching a reinvigorated version of Beats Music, Apple is allegedly planning to enhance its iTunes Radio services, as well. Recently hired radio host, Zane Lowe, is expected to steer that project.
